Iskar gorge (Lyutibrod) Temnata dupka cave (Lakatnik) - video

The Iskar is the longest purely Bulgarian river, the oldest river in the Balkans, and a right tributary of the Danube. The river is 368 km long, with approximately 150 km consisting of a gorge. The most spectacular section is the 70 km stretch between the village of Lyutibrod and the town of Novi Iskar.

The area of the Iskar gorge is filled with caves, most of which are not accessible to the average tourist. The most famous among them is the Temnata Dupka (Black Hole) cave, which resembles a giant black hole in the rock. It is located near the Lakatnik railway station, 27 meters above the level of the Iskar River. I found several different measurements of its length online (2.75 km, 5 km, 9 km). It is said to have four levels, with two main passages connected to each other, and a smaller river flows within it. The cave has a labyrinthine structure.

The entrance to the Black Hole cave opens on the side of the Lakatnik rocks, which are spectacular rock formations shaped by water and wind in soft limestone. They resemble towers, needles, and pyramids. A marked trail from the vicinity of the Lakatnik railway station, beginning at the Zhitolyub spring, leads to the Temnata Dupka cave, the Alpine clearing, and the Black Wall.

From the top of the rocks, there is a stunning view of the Iskar River valley. At the edge of the cliff, there is a small cabin that serves as a shelter. This is the Falcon's Nest (Orlovo Gnezdo), which can only be reached by rock climbers. From the entrance of the Temnata Dupka cave, you can continue walking along the path to the top of the rocks.
